Industry and Science Growing Business Investment Resources The Northern Australia CO2 Store SHELL AUSTRALIA PTY LTD

This project builds on work carried out by Geoscience Australia’s (GA) regional assessment of the CO2 storage potential in the Petrel Sub-basin in Northern Territory. Adding to Evans Shoal Joint Venture studies the project aims to:
Perform a detailed subsurface assessment of an area of the Petrel Sub Basin to increase subsurface knowledge and de-risk locations within the basin.
Perform rock property testing
Obtain additional relevant data to conduct appropriate geomechanical, geochemical & geophysical modelling
Assess suitable transportation and sequestration technologies based on Shell Quest & Goldeneye experience
Assess facilities requirements, design surface and downhole equipment & determine well number to accommodate Evans Shoal CO2
Produce a CO2 sequestration location appraisal plan
There are several fields in Bonaparte Basin with high CO2 and this evaluation opens up the opportunity to unlock gas in the region through collaboration/investment with other LNG operators in Darwin to develop a CO2 store.

Carbon Capture & Storage Demonstration Project in the Surat Basin of Queensland incorporating the design and construction of injection facilities at Glenhaven for the injection and monitoring of carbon dioxide sourced from a PCC plant at Millmerran Power Station.
The project also includes the permitting process and Community and Stakeholder engagement to facilitate this project and any future injection of carbon dioxide. Now that the Pre-feasibility has been successfully completed (West Wandoan well 1 drilled and geological P95 achieved), the current program is to prepare for test injection of up to 180,000 tonnes of CO2 into the Precipice Sandstone formation to achieve permitting for long term storage of CO2.

Industry and Science Growing Business Investment Resources Australian Subsurface Carbon Sequestration Simulator UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE

Accurate simulation, forecasting, and monitoring of carbon dioxide behaviour is a prerequisite for safe and cost-effective subsurface CO2 abatement. Supporting the Australian clean coal and energy sectors in this quest, with tools and expertise that will boost productivity by transforming traditional discipline-separated sequential workflows, is the goal of this reservoir engineering - hydrogeophysics - simulation-guided engineering project. Via new multiphysics software integrating:
1) fine-grained parallel space-time adaptive injection simulation,
2) forecasting of the CO2-plume geophysical signature,
3) inverse analysis of the plume, and 4) simulation-driven design of injection and monitoring systems, we will improve subsurface knowledge and advance the understanding of Australia’s storage capacity. Demonstration and validation of this new carbon dioxide storage methodology will occur with datasets from Otway, Aquistore and a Chinese Carbon Capture & Storage site.

Industry and Science Growing Business Investment Resources Emissions study with pilot plant at AGL Loy Yang power station CSIRO

This project builds on the existing collaboration between IHI, a Japanese supplier of post-combustion CO2 capture technology, CSIRO and AGL Loy Yang supported through Brown Coal Innovation Australia. In that collaboration an amine based Post Combustion CO2 Capture pilot plant has been designed and manufactured in Japan and delivered to AGL Loy Yang power station, where it will be operated in two 5000 hour experimental campaigns to assess the energy performance and amine degradation. The proposed project will extend that successful collaboration into an assessment of the plant's atmospheric emissions. Solid knowledge around the emissions from an amine-based Post Combustion CO2 Capture plant is crucial for future large scale application and deployment of the technology.

Industry and Science Growing Business Investment Resources Improving safety and efficiency of CO2 pipelines ENERGY PIPELINES CRC LTD.

Safety and efficiency are key to the transportation of dense phase CO2 for Carbon Capture & Storage projects.
Recent Research & Development has shown that fracture control models for gas pipelines are not valid for dense phase CO2 pipelines. Therefore current CO2 pipeline Standards require Carbon Capture & Storage projects opting to deploy dense phase CO2 pipelines to undertake full scale testing to validate their design. This project will develop a new fracture control model for CO2 pipelines, validated by two full scale fracture tests. The dispersion of the CO2 from the tests into the atmosphere will be measured allowing validation of CO2 dispersion models. This is critical in mitigating hazards posed by releases of CO2 from pipelines. The project will also explore financial benefits which could be gained by operating long distance pipelines at higher pressure. The outcomes of this project will provide confidence in critical areas of CO2 pipeline design and operation, improving the technical and financial viability of CO2 pipelines.

Industry and Science Growing Business Investment Resources University of Queensland - Surat Deep Aquifer Appraisal Project UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND

This is an evolution of the prev.University of Queensland-Cwlth-ACALET, Carbon Geostorage Initiative. The project has two main themes:-
A. Low cost, dynamic calibration of wide-area, deep aquifer dynamics in a sparse data synclinal setting. This comprises field operations (entering and testing existing deep, suspended gas exploration wells) and significant geotechnical and techno-economic study work, leading to calibrated groundwater, field development and Carbon Capture & Storage deployment scenarios.
B. Social science: public engagement & education on Carbon Capture & Storage in the context of future energy technology choices, leading to improved engagement and educational outcomes.
Both themes support large numbers of Australian and Chinese PhDs, where possible 'paired' to study similar phenomena in each country. There is significant Chinese research and industry support. Carbon Capture and Storage Research Development Fund and University of Queensland.
