Australia’s plan for AI

The Australian Government’s ambition is to harness AI technologies to create a fairer, stronger Australia where every person shares the benefits.

AI is reshaping the global economy and how Australians work, learn and connect. It can:

  • close service gaps in health, disability and aged care
  • improve education and employment opportunities
  • create secure, well-paid jobs in future industries
  • create an environment for innovation.

To remain competitive, productive and resilient, we need coordinated action to seize the potential of AI while managing its risks.

The National AI Plan sets out the government’s direction on AI. It focusses on:

  • capturing the opportunity
  • spreading the benefits
  • keeping Australians safe.

Capturing the AI opportunity

We are capturing the opportunity for Australia to become a global leader in developing and adopting trusted, secure and responsible AI.

Spreading the benefits

Every Australian should be able to benefit from AI, regardless of age, location or gender. We are spreading the benefits of AI by supporting adoption. AI adoption has the potential to improve business productivity and deliver better wages, job satisfaction and stability for workers.

  • AI Adopt Program

The program funds centres to help Australian businesses adopt AI. We ran a competitive grant process to select entities to deliver it.
  • Guidance for AI Adoption

This practical resource helps Australian business adopt AI safely and responsibly. It evolves the Voluntary AI Safety Standard and Australia’s AI Ethics Principles.

Keeping Australians safe

To protect Australians and maintain trust and confidence in AI systems, we’re committed to understanding and responding to advanced AI.

  • Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute

The government is establishing an Australian AI Safety Institute to monitor, test and share information on emerging AI capabilities, risks and harms.
  • AI safety science

We’re progressing national and international knowledge on AI capabilities, risks and harms.

Partnering internationally on responsible AI

Australia engages internationally on AI to support Australian innovation and to shape international AI governance.
