About mineral export controls

The Australian Government has strict export controls in place for certain mineral resources. Under the Customs Act 1901 and its subordinate regulations, you must have government permission before you can export these materials. 

Mineral export controls cover:

  • rough diamonds
  • uranium ore concentrate (UOC)
  • ores that contain 500 parts per million (ppm) or more of uranium, thorium or a combination of those materials
  • other nuclear material.

Our export controls reflect Australia’s international obligations and stringent nuclear safeguards, security and safety requirements.

Export requirements

Controlled mineral resources have different export requirements. You must follow the relevant process for each resource to receive permission to export.
