Recent pipeline updates

Version 2 notes (24/11/2025)

In this edition of the pipeline, we have gathered publicly available data to update information on passenger rolling stock procurements.

This information is available on the passenger rolling stock manufacturing procurements page. It includes data on new procurements:

  • start and end year
  • estimated total value
  • the number of trains and carriages.

We have also expanded the pipeline to include a separate dataset of the current national operational passenger fleet.

This information is available on the operational passenger rolling stock projections page. In includes information about the age and post-delivery works of rolling stock. This is a first step in mapping longer term demand projections.

Version 1 notes (27/05/2024)

We released the first pipeline on 27 May 2024. ONRIC collaborated with states and territories to compile and present data on planned and active procurements of passenger rolling stock. It included data current to 10 April 2024.

There was no information for the Northern Territory or Tasmania. This is because there were no rolling stock procurements in those jurisdictions.

Data included the procurement name, location, status, timeframe and value, rolling stock type and volume. Users could access information as:

  • interactive charts that display some procurement data
  • a more comprehensive data table with links to the projects.
