Helping industry and businesses harness technology

We are supporting businesses and industries to develop and adopt secure digital technologies for Australia’s future.

Digital technologies are becoming part of our everyday lives. These technologies are providing new opportunities to create jobs, drive economic growth and boost competiveness.

Delivering a modern digital economy

Our department is helping to deliver a modern, digital economy through Australia’s Digital Economy Strategy. This whole-of-government strategy envisions Australia as a leading digital economy and society by 2030.

We are supporting this vision in 3 areas:

  • putting the foundations in place to grow the digital economy, including supporting cyber security
  • building capabilities in emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, blockchain and quantum computing
  • lifting the digital capabilities of small to medium business enterprises (SMEs) and supporting a dynamic and emerging tech sector.

Advancing artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) can help the economy thrive.

See how we are positioning Australia as a global leader in developing and adopting trusted, secure and responsible AI technology.

Developing blockchain capabilities

Blockchain is a technology for storing and exchanging data that can improve business processes and efficiencies.

See how we are progressing towards a blockchain-empowered future.

Building cyber secure businesses

Australia’s Cyber Security Strategy 2020 sets out a plan to create a more secure digital environment for Australians and Australian businesses. Our department is helping to deliver the strategy through programs that:

  • incentivise businesses to protect themselves and their customers
  • grow a skilled cyber security workforce
  • build trust in the digital economy.

This includes initiatives under the Cyber Security National Workforce Growth Program that aim to grow Australia’s cyber security capabilities:

Growing Australia’s quantum industry

The Australian Government is investing in initiatives to support Australia’s quantum industry.

Quantum technology can create efficiencies and expand capabilities for businesses across the economy.

Our department is developing the National Quantum Strategy. It will set out the process for helping Australian quantum meet its economic potential. Australia’s Chief Scientist Dr Cathy Foley will guide the strategy with a committee of other quantum experts and stakeholders.

We are also developing a Quantum Commercialisation Hub. It will support quantum research commercialisation and  quantum business growth in Australia. The hub will form international partnerships with like-minded countries to:

  • share quantum skills, ideas and resources
  • help Australian quantum businesses access new markets.

Accelerating digital business technology

The government’s Digital Business Plan encourages businesses to take advantage of digital technologies.

Our department developed digital tools under the plan:

Driving Industry 4.0 transformation

The fourth industrial revolution, Industry 4.0, is transforming how businesses operate by connecting the physical with the digital world. Artificial intelligence, advanced automation and robotics are examples of Industry 4.0 technologies.

We released an Industry 4.0 Testlabs in Australia report in 2017 to improve the competitiveness of Australian manufacturing industries through Industry 4.0 technologies. The Industry 4.0 Testlabs pilot program established testlabs at 6 Australian universities.
