Decarbonising LNG with CCS: Australia-Japan collaboration for global impact

Australia and Japan are long-standing energy partners, united by a shared commitment to achieving net zero. This event will convene government and industry to explore acceleration of CCS deployment through commercial, technical and regulatory pathways.

Speakers

  • Jane Burton
    Executive Director – CabonNet Project
    Jane is responsible for overseeing all elements of the CarbonNet Project. CarbonNet is a Victorian Government initiative to capture CO2 from industrial emissions and storing it in the Gippsland Basin. She has over 30 years of experience in public and private sectors, covering industrial chemistry, resource development, and public administration.

    Jane has extensive experience working with Japanese companies and is continuing to work together with Japan on low-emissions technology and innovation.
    Jane received the 2019 Most Exceptional Women in Resources award and is also a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Energy. She is also a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
  • Dr Damian Barrett
    Research Director – CSIRO
    Damian is responsible for driving CSIRO’s research in geoscience and engineering of carbon capture and storage (CCS). As well as hydrogen production and storage, natural gas production and underground energy storage. He has over 30 years of scientific and research management experience in the public and private sectors.

    Damian has presented at over 80 national and international workshops and conferences on different topics, including natural gas greenhouse emissions and CCS. He has published over 130 refereed papers, is cited more than 7800 times and has a H-index of 39.
  • Sean Pitt

    Executive Vice President – Marketing, Trading and Shipping, Santos
    Sean has over 30 years of experience in the utilities and resources sectors, with a focus on oil and gas. Sean has held senior roles across commercial, finance, and operations, and has led complex negotiations and transactions in LNG, M&A, and trading.

    Sean has worked in operations and maintenance with Alcoa, Woodside and JERA before joining Santos.

    Sean is a member of CPA Australia and a former member of the Institute of Arbitrators in London.
  • Carmela Pavlic Searle
    Director, Energy Diversification - Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
    Carmela is Director of Energy Diversification at Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). Carmela leads work in clean energy, international trade, and cross-sector collaboration.

    Carmela has extensive experience in energy diversification, international clean energy trade, and the transboundary movement of CO2.

    Carmela will represent Australia in the negotiation of bilateral agreements to facilitate the transboundary movement of CO2 between Australia and partner countries.
  • Sakura Murahashi
    Deputy Director, Resources Development Division, Agency for Natural Resources and Energy
    Sakura serves as Deputy Director of the Resources Development Division at Japan’s Agency for Natural Resources and Energy (ANRE). ANRE is part of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). Since joining METI in 2016, she has held key roles across nuclear fuel reprocessing, aerospace and defence and international affairs. Her academic background includes a Master in Public Policy from the National University of Singapore and a Bachelor of Laws from Keio University.
  • Yuki Nakagawa
    Deputy Director, International Affairs Division, Agency for Natural Resources and Energy
    Yuki serves as Deputy Director in the International Affairs Division at Japan’s Agency for Natural Resources and Energy (ANRE). ANRE is part of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). Yuki previously worked at the Board of Audit. His academic background includes a Master in Sustainability Studies from Hosei University and a Bachelor of Laws from Senshu University.
