The National Measurement Institute (NMI) has released its 2026–27 legal metrology priorities.
The priorities guide NMI’s work to ensure measuring instruments are reliable and accurate, correct measuring procedures are used, and Australian’s get what they pay for.
The priorities focus on the biggest risks to shoppers and honest businesses. They cover everyday sales, from fuel at the bowser to packaged goods, public weighbridges and garden materials sold by measure.
Inspectors will work in cities and regional areas, focusing on:
- over‑the‑counter sales
- pre-packaged goods
- fuel pumps
- public weighbridges
- businesses with a history of non‑compliance.
NMI will also run targeted audits in higher-risk sectors, including:
- animal and pet supplies
- regional livestock suppliers
- garden and landscape materials
- higher‑risk retail sales.
When NMI finds a problem
Most businesses fix problems quickly when inspectors find them, and NMI will keep helping businesses meet their obligations. Where needed, we will use guidance, warnings, notices and enforcement action.
This approach protects fair competition and builds trust.
NMI will also establish ways to deal with emerging risks, including:
- electric vehicle charging equipment
- online trading
- electricity meters in shared buildings
- new ways to test weighbridges.
These pilot programs will help shape future checks and keep the system working well.
While the priorities set out NMI’s focus for the year ahead, the court case below, highlights how NMI responds when serious breaches are found.
Court case highlights enforcement action
On 17 July, the Adelaide Magistrates Court penalised Southern Cross Fuel Pty Ltd $55,000 for use of an inaccurate instrument for trade.
This follows an NMI investigation that began when a consumer made a complaint.
NMI found that fuel dispensers at the company’s former service station in Fulham Gardens were inaccurate and had been adjusted outside legal limits.
The company pleaded guilty under the National Measurement Act 1960. The maximum penalty is $313,000.
