About the program

The Australia-Vietnam Science, Technology and Innovation Cooperation Initiative (AVSTICI) funds joint research projects between Australian businesses, universities, industry partners and research institutes and their counterparts in Vietnam.

This strengthens bilateral cooperation by building lasting science, technology and innovation links. The program is an initiative under the Australia-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Funded projects may run for 2-3 years and receive funding of between $100,000 and $300,000 per grant. The total funding pool is $1.3 million.

Australian applicants and their Vietnamese counterparts both need to submit a proposal for funding. Proposals will be assessed for eligibility by their respective administering bodies.

Priority areas of research

Projects are expected to contribute to shared priority areas including:

  • new and renewable technologies
  • a sustainable blue economy
  • recycling and waste management.

Program delivery

The Australian and Vietnamese governments jointly own the initiative. Each country administers its side of the program independently.

Our department funds the Australian researchers. Vietnamese partners will be funded separately under arrangements administered by the Ministry of Science and Technology of Vietnam (MOST).

The Australian Academy of Science (AAS) administers the initiative on our behalf through a single competitive funding round. AAS is the key delivery partner responsible for collecting and managing all project reporting from Australian recipients. This includes grant disbursement, compliance and reporting obligations. The Vietnamese Government does the same for Vietnamese projects.
