Introduction

Australia and the United Kingdom (UK) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on AI safety and security collaboration.

It is part of the Australian Government’s work with trusted international partners to strengthen cooperation on AI safety and security.

Overview

The MoU establishes a framework to deepen cooperation between the Australian AI Safety Institute, which is currently being established, and the UK AI Security Institute.

Under the MoU, Australia and the UK aim to:

  • share information and expertise on emerging AI capabilities and risks, and best practices for testing AI systems
  • conduct joint research, including approaches to measure, test and manage risks
  • support the multilateral work of the International Network for Advanced AI Measurement, Evaluation and Science.

The agreement reflects Australia and the UK’s shared interest in improving how we measure understand and respond to risks from AI systems.

The MoU supports the government’s National AI Plan, including the objective to keep Australians safe by strengthening international cooperation on AI risks and safety. International cooperation will help Australia draw on international expertise, contribute to emerging best practice, and build technical capability in AI safety and security.
