2023 offshore greenhouse gas storage acreage release

Introduction

10 acreage release areas are available for bidding to explore offshore greenhouse gas storage locations.

These areas are offshore of Western Australia, Victoria and Tasmania across 7 basins:

  • Bonaparte
  • Browse
  • Northern Carnarvon
  • Perth
  • Otway
  • Bass
  • Gippsland.

Bidding closes at 4.00 pm on Tuesday 28 November 2023.

Basins

Bonaparte Basin

One area is in the Bonaparte Basin, offshore northern Australia.

Browse Basin

One area is in the Browse Basin, offshore north-western Australia.

Northern Carnarvon Basin

Three areas are in the Northern Carnarvon Basin, offshore north-western Australia.

Perth Basin

One area is in the Perth Basin, offshore western Australia.

Otway Basin

Two areas are in the Otway Basin, offshore south-eastern Australia.

Bass Basin

One area is in the Bass Basin, offshore south-eastern Australia.

Gippsland Basin

One area is in the Gippsland Basin, offshore south-eastern Australia.

About this release

Industry nominated proposed release areas. Then we consulted with the public, governments and stakeholders to determine the final release areas. The minister considered all consultation comments before endorsing release areas for this bidding round.

The minister announced the 2023 GHG acreage release on 29 August 2023.
