NMI invited individuals, industry and other relevant stakeholders to have their say on proposed amendments in late 2025.
This public consultation followed an NMI review of legislative instruments made under the National Measurement Act 1960. We also engaged with key stakeholders across government and the private sector as part of the review.
Stakeholders unanimously support the proposal to remake certain legislative instruments, and to let others sunset.
Legislative instruments to undergo minor updates are:
- National Measurement Guidelines 2026
- National Measurement Recognized-Value Standard of Measurement of Position 2026
- National Measurement Recognized-Value Standard of Measurement of Density - Water 2026
- National Measurement Recognized-Value Standard of Measurement of Acceleration Due to Gravity (Lindfield, NSW) 2026.
The following legislative instruments will sunset:
- National Measurement Act 1960 - Recognized-Value Standard of Measurement of Velocity Electromagnetic Waves in a Vacuum
- National Measurement Act 1960 - Recognized-Value Standard of Measurement of Viscosity - Dynamic Viscosity of Water at a Temperature in the Range 19.98°C to 20.02°C
- National Measurement Act 1960 - Recognized-Value Standard of Measurement of Viscosity - Dynamic Viscosity of Water at a Temperature of 20°C
- National Measurement Act 1960 - Recognized-Value Standard of Measurement of Density Mercury
- National Measurement Act 1960 - Recognized-Value Standard of Measurement of Density - Standard Mean Ocean Water
- National Measurement Act 1960 - para 8A(1)(a) and (b) - Recognized-Value Standard of Measurement of Acceleration Due to Gravity.
