Two regulations originally scheduled to sunset on 1 April 2026 will now remain in force.

These are the:

  • National Measurement Regulations 1999
  • National Trade Measurement Regulations 2009.

The legislation amendment exempting the regulations from sunsetting came into effect on 10 December 2025.

Sunsetting would have meant these regulations would have stopped being law after 1 April 2026. Because of the exemption, businesses and the community can be confident these rules will stay in place. Parliament will check the exemption as part of its usual review process.

Other legislative instruments under the Act, including the National Measurement Guidelines 2016 and recognized-value standards, are still set to expire on 1 April 2026.

The National Measurement Institute (NMI) is currently reviewing and remaking these instruments, and you can have your say until 24 December 2025.

Broader reforms are also underway to modernise Australia’s measurement laws. We will provide more information in 2026.
