The Australian Government is manufacturing a new future for our nation. Manufacturing is critical to a modern Australian economy—a key part of almost every supply chain that adds significant value to all sectors.

Under the Modern Manufacturing Strategy road maps for 6 key areas of focuswere developed with industry to set out plans for industry and government to strengthen Australia’s manufacturing capability. The road maps were led by industry taskforces to identify and set a future vision for the priority areas with clear goals, opportunities and actions over the next 2, 5 and 10 years.

Australia produces some of the world’s most innovative and cutting-edge defence technologies.

Manufacturing defence related products, systems and components here at home will help Australia meet future challenges for our national security and provide opportunities for Australians.

But there is also an opportunity to export more of these products to like-minded countries around the globe.

Defence is one of six priority areas under the Australian Government’s $1.5 billion Modern Manufacturing Strategy.

Businesses with projects in the priority area are now able to apply for support under our Modern Manufacturing Initiative.

Grants will be available for companies to commercialise new products and processes or integrate into domestic and global supply chains.

To guide funding applications, we have released an industry-led Defence manufacturing road map.

The road map identifies a range of potential growth areas:

  • Priorities like unmanned aircraft and night vision goggles
  • Exporting capabilities, like shipbuilding or radar systems
  • Cross-sector applications like diagnostic tools for medical countermeasures.
