Overview of the memorandum of understanding to support the Australia-Canada-India Technology and Innovation (ACITI) Partnership

Introduction

Australia, Canada and India have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation in technology and innovation. 

The MoU is part of the Australia-Canada-India Technology and Innovation (ACITI) Partnership. 

The agreement reflects the 3 countries' shared commitment to:  

  • harnessing emerging technologies responsibly  
  • strengthening innovation ecosystems  
  • supporting economic growth  
  • deepening technology partnerships across the Indo-Pacific and North America.

Overview

The MoU establishes a framework for cooperation between:  

  • Australia's Department of Industry, Science and Resources  
  • Canada's Department of Industry  
  • India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.  

It supports collaboration, information sharing and joint initiatives in artificial intelligence (AI), emerging technologies and the digital economy.

The partnership provides a platform to strengthen research and commercial links, build workforce capability and promote trusted cooperation on the opportunities and challenges arising from rapid technological change.

The ACITI MoU includes work to exchange knowledge and collaboration in:

  • AI adoption, productivity and workforce skills
  • AI startup, business and investment ecosystem collaboration
  • AI policy and regulation exchanges
  • AI risks and mitigations.

It also covers other related fields, including:

  • semiconductors  
  • data centres and cloud  
  • digital public infrastructure  
  • internet-of-things (IoT)  
  • robots
  • high-performance computing  
  • cybersecurity.

A joint working group on technology and innovation will implement the MoU. It will develop implementation mechanisms, identify priority activities and guide cooperation under the partnership.
