Trade remedies are tools the Australian Government can use to respond to unfair trade practices. An effective trade remedies system plays a critical role in keeping Australian industries competitive and resilient.

Australian trade remedies follow international trade rules that the World Trade Organisation (WTO) governs. These include:

  • anti-dumping measures
  • countervailing measures
  • safeguard measures.

Trade remedies can prevent harm to Australian industry from unfair trade practices. This includes when overseas companies sell products in Australia for less than in their home market. Or when a foreign government gives the producers of the imported good financial support or subsidies. By applying duties, it helps to level the playing field for Australian producers.

Globally, the number of trade interventions is increasing. The nature of global industrial investment and trade has evolved in ways that the WTO rules did not envision. Despite the rapidly changing international landscape, Australia’s trade remedies system has not undergone major change since 2015.

We’re now consulting on options to reform Australia’s trade remedies system. We are seeking insights from those who have or intend to use trade remedies or have been affected by them.

The proposed reforms will make sure the system remains fit for purpose and responsive to changes in the global trade environment. They will help to streamline processes, reduce administrative burden, and support timely, effective decision-making.
