The National inventory of radioactive waste estimates the amount of radioactive waste in Australia requiring disposal.

The new inventory shows how the amount of radioactive waste in Australia has changed since we published the last edition in 2022. It forecasts how much waste will exist based on nuclear activities in health, research and industry.

Changes in the inventory also reflect:

  • waste holders’ better understanding of the characteristics of existing waste
  • changing assumptions about how much waste ongoing and future activities will generate.

The inventory helps ARWA and the Australian Government develop permanent disposal solutions for existing and future radioactive waste.

ARWA updates its radioactive waste inventory every 3 years.

ARWA is also inviting industries and government bodies to share information about radioactive waste management capabilities, capacities and constraints. This will inform future options.
