Timely, safe and environmentally responsible decommissioning is critical to preserving our marine environment and maintaining industry’s social licence to operate.

Decommissioning is a normal and inevitable process during the lifecycle of an offshore project. As outlined in Australia’s Offshore Resources Decommissioning Roadmap, a regulatory framework that protects the environment and attracts investment is essential to build a globally competitive domestic decommissioning industry.

Our consultation paper outlines proposed reforms to strengthen the decommissioning framework so industry:

  • decommissions in a timely, safe and environmentally responsible way
  • remains responsible for the risks and liabilities of offshore activities.

We invite stakeholders to give feedback on:

  • the existing decommissioning framework in Australia
  • lessons from international and onshore frameworks
  • proposed areas for reform.

We’re also seeking input on how these reforms could apply to decommissioning arrangements for greenhouse gas storage.

Your views will help shape an effective and balanced regulatory framework for offshore decommissioning in Australia.
