Timely, safe and environmentally responsible decommissioning is critical to preserving our marine environment and maintaining industry’s social licence to operate.
Decommissioning is a normal and inevitable process during the lifecycle of an offshore project. As outlined in Australia’s Offshore Resources Decommissioning Roadmap, a regulatory framework that protects the environment and attracts investment is essential to build a globally competitive domestic decommissioning industry.
Our consultation paper outlines proposed reforms to strengthen the decommissioning framework so industry:
- decommissions in a timely, safe and environmentally responsible way
- remains responsible for the risks and liabilities of offshore activities.
We invite stakeholders to give feedback on:
- the existing decommissioning framework in Australia
- lessons from international and onshore frameworks
- proposed areas for reform.
We’re also seeking input on how these reforms could apply to decommissioning arrangements for greenhouse gas storage.
