NMI Metre Convention

Each year, World Metrology Day celebrates the impact measurement has on science, industry, and our everyday lives.

This year’s theme, ‘Measurements for all times, for all people’, highlights the essential role of measurement in fostering progress and innovation around the world. Many aspects of modern life depend on speaking a single shared language of measurement.

Today marks the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Metre Convention, the international treaty that supports the metric system. On 20 May 1875, 17 signatory States committed to ‘the international unification and improvement of the metric system’, a single language for measurement supporting global trade and innovation.

Chief Metrologist and CEO of the National Measurement Institute Dr Bruce Warrington is looking forward to celebrating with NMI staff and the measurement community.

‘Measurement has grown with technology over the 150 years of the Metre Convention. Today NMI measurement expertise supports critical sectors across the economy and society, including trade, manufacturing, Defence, national security, energy, food, health and the environment.’

‘Measurement is the strong foundation that gives us confidence in the world around us and will help us to shape the future for generations to come.’

Happy World Metrology Day!
