Australia generates radioactive waste through the production and use of life-saving nuclear medicines and cancer treatments, as well as from research, industry and defence activities.
The framework:
- sets out the Australian Government's approach to managing and disposing of radioactive waste
- explains the roles and responsibilities of governments, regulators, waste generators and waste holders
- provides strategic direction for the safe and secure stewardship of radioactive waste.
Our department published the first Australian Radioactive Waste Management Framework in 2018. Since then, Australia's radioactive waste management landscape has evolved. The updated framework reflects changes such as:
- the establishment of the Australian Radioactive Waste Agency (ARWA)
- developments associated with the AUKUS program
- the Australian Government's decision not to move forward with the previously shortlisted sites for a national radioactive waste disposal facility
- the emergence of private-sector radioactive waste management services.
The updated framework will guide national stewardship arrangements and support ongoing stakeholder engagement. It will also help inform future radioactive waste management activities across Australia.
Feedback from industry, experts and other interested stakeholders will help shape the new framework. The Australian Government expects to release it in early 2027.
