The NMI plays a vital role in advancing Australia’s food technology sector. We support Australian companies to get innovative products to market and navigate complex international regulatory landscapes. We partnered with Sydney-based Vow Foods to help them get into the international market.

Vow Foods grow cultured meat from animal cells to create high-end novel foods for commercial distribution.

Using Japanese quail cells, Vow Foods developed 3 lab-grown meat products: foie gras, a forged whipped pate and an edible tallow candle.

They continue to develop and create new cultured meats to meet increasing demand. Their products feature on high-end restaurant menus in Australia and Singapore.

Vow’s challenge

Novel foods such as lab-grown meat are non-traditional foods. They’re an innovative way to solve global food challenges and provide sustainable alternatives to traditional agriculture.

The challenge is that novel foods lack a long track record of human use. Plus, getting them to market means navigating complex regulations and safety standards.

Food regulators must assess them to make sure they’re safe to eat before adding them to the food supply. Vow Foods had to meet the strict requirements set by global regulators, including:

  • Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ)
  • the Singapore Food Agency (SFA)
  • US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

They also had to complete complex safety assessments and regulatory processes to adhere to relevant food standards codes. This included detailed reports providing scientific proof supporting the safety, quality and consistency of their products.

Successful outcomes

Since the launch of their products in May 2025, demand has risen by 200% each month. Vow Foods is one of only 3 companies worldwide approved to sell lab-grown meat for humans to eat. Regulators have approved their products for sale in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore.

The data generated by NMI forms the backbone of our compositional analysis and safety framework. The reports are included in our dossier submissions, providing regulators with the critical data they need to assess our products.
