With over 2,000 in-person and online events, there’s no shortage of activities to excite curiosity at National Science Week 2025.
This year our department funded 31 community science events with $515,000 in grants. Projects we supported include:
- Indigenous Science Storytelling Series, a multimedia showcase of the contributions of Indigenous Australians in STEM highlighting traditional knowledge, environmental stewardship and innovation.
- The Ammonites ROCK!, an all-female science performance group singing songs about Australia’s prehistoric past across regional Australia.
- Decoding the Universe from north-west Tassie, a diverse program of events inviting the community to become ‘science detectives’, decoding the universe from sea to stars.
- A Different Light: Multisensory Science Books of X-Ray Crystallography, a sensory science exhibition exploring Australia's contributions to X-ray crystallography, designed for blind and low-vision audiences.
- Marine Rescue: the Science Behind Lives at Sea, which provides hands-on activities covering oceanography and survival technology, as well as special talks that will highlight the role of women in the marine industry.
- Gladstone Art Science Innovation Festival, a science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM) event highlighting research, sustainability, and First Nations perspectives on innovation.
- Biodiversity Buzz: Top End Eco Science Fair, a variety of events to build community knowledge about ecosystems, biodiversity, and the importance of habitat preservation.
There’s also a range of exciting events from our department and portfolio agencies:
- Questacon will host a range of interactive activities in Canberra, across Australia and online. This includes co-hosting a panel discussion with Inspiring Australia on future careers in science, technology and innovation.
- Students across Australia can become space explorers from their classroom with the Australian Space Agency’s Mission: Space Virtual Excursions.
- The National Measurement Institute (NMI) celebrates the 150 anniversary of the Metre Treaty and will host the annual National Measurement Awards.
- CSIRO’s National Science Experiment will connect curious minds with nature and form a nationwide team of citizen scientists.
- Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) is unpacking quantum science through expert panels, videos and interactive content.
National Science Week is an important part of the Australian Government’s approach to science engagement and inspiring an interest in STEM for all Australians.
