The MOU gives a framework for technical cooperation between the Australian and Canadian Governments on AI safety.

Areas of collaboration include:

  • exchanging information on AI technologies, risks, methods, tools and evaluations
  • joint research on mitigating risks of advanced AI systems
  • supporting internationally recognised guidelines and best practices on AI evaluation.

The MOU builds on joint work to understand and reduce risks from AI generated content. Australia and Canada have led work on this topic as founding members of the International Network for Advanced AI Measurement, Evaluation and Science.

The MoU will position both countries to draw on shared expertise and give well-informed insights to relevant parts of their AI systems.

The Australian and Canadian governments will collaborate through their AI safety institutes. Australia will establish our AI safety institute in the first half of 2026.

The MoU was announced during the recent visit to Australia of the Prime Minister of Canada, the Rt Hon Mark Carney MP.
