Data insights
Emissions for the year to June 2020 are estimated to be 513.4 Mt CO2-e. This is down 3% or 16.1 Mt CO2-e on the previous year and the lowest level since 1998.
The single largest factor behind reduction was the ongoing, structural decline in emissions from electricity (4.3% or 7.7 Mt CO2-e).
Other factors include:
- the impact of COVID restrictions on emissions from transport (6.7% or 6.7 Mt CO2-e)
- ongoing reductions in emissions from electricity due in increasing generation from renewables (4.3% or 7.7 Mt CO2-e)
- the lingering effects of last year’s drought on agriculture (3.7% or 2.6 Mt CO2-e)
In the year to June 2020, emissions per capita and the emissions intensity of the economy were at their lowest levels in 30 years. Emissions per capita were lower than 1990 by 44.7% while the emissions intensity of the economy was 64.7% lower than in 1990.
National emission levels for the June quarter 2020 were down by 6.2% or 8.0 Mt CO2-e on the previous quarter. This was on a seasonally adjusted and weather normalised basis.
Australia’s emissions have declined 18.9% since the peak in the year to June 2007. The year to June emissions were 5.7% below emissions for the year to June in 2000. They were 16.6% below emissions in the year to June 2005.
