Simplifying business

The National Business Simplification Initiative (NBSI) is a Commonwealth agreement between the Australian, state and territory governments.

The agreement focuses on helping businesses grow and create jobs, new products, and market opportunities. It achieves this by cutting red tape and improving services.

The governments are looking at improvements in:

  • Making it easier to do business with government: streamlining regulation and services.
  • Making it easier to get government business: improving procurement processes so businesses of all sizes can compete.
  • Removing barriers to business growth and innovation: improving regulations and platforms to promote greater innovation and expansion.

Simplifying business registration

As part of this initiative, we have made it easier to register a business online. After the Business Registration Service was launched, it was linked to the Service NSW initiative. This made it easier for people wanting to open a café, bar or restaurant to register and gain necessary approvals.

Having it all in one place has reduced the average time taken to register a business from over an hour to less than 15 minutes.
