Under Helen’s leadership, the team delivers world-class chemical and biological measurement standards, supporting sectors like health, environment, food and trade.

In Helen's own words, 'Measurement science is more than just accuracy, it's about trust, safety, and progress. It's the invisible force that supports innovation, protects communities and empowers industries.’

'Our work is critical to Australia's resilience and competitiveness. We're not just measuring, we're enabling the decisions that will shape our future.'

Career journey

Helen’s passion for science began as a child fascinated by mathematics and puzzles. As a 10-year-old discovering Pythagoras' theorem, she felt an instant connection to mathematics. 'The world of maths was beautiful and made sense to me; there was logic and for every problem there was a solution – you just had to find it!'

Helen's journey with NMI began in 1997 when she carried out her honours research project. After working in industry and taking time for personal growth, Helen completed a Masters in Theology and undertook volunteer work both in Australia and abroad. She then returned to academia to pursue a PhD at the University of Sydney, which she completed in 2009.

Leadership grounded in people and purpose

In 2024 Helen became general manager of NMI’s chemical and biological metrology branch. In this role, she focuses on modernising infrastructure, driving digital transformation and ensuring NMI remains at the forefront of measurement science.

‘It’s about aligning our science with what Australia needs - now and into the future,’ she says.

As a leader, she is guided by three core values: responsibility, vision and humanity.

‘Leadership is about people. I want everyone to feel valued, supported and inspired to do their best work.’

Helen’s team provides reference materials, calibration services and expert advice to improve quality and regulatory compliance. They also conduct forensic drug testing for the Australian Federal Police and the Australian Border Force, and anti-doping testing services for Sports Integrity Australia.

These services are critical in detecting novel psychoactive substances coming into our country as well as detecting new doping methods.

'We need to think ahead, about sovereign capability, emerging risks and the technologies that will define the next decade,' Helen said. 'The future of measurement is dynamic, digital and deeply connected to the challenges we face as a nation.'

Helen is also a passionate advocate for diversity in science, continuing to mentor emerging scientists, especially women and underrepresented groups across the sector. Known for her warmth and authenticity, she brings teams together with empathy, humour and a shared sense of purpose.

Outside of work, Helen finds balance through family life with her husband, two sons and their beloved cat, Chomp. She loves beach days, sunshine, and strategy games that challenge her thinking and bring out her competitive side. ‘Whether it’s a board game night or a digital strategy challenge, it’s a great way to connect and unwind.’

Through the dedication of people like Dr Helen Salouros and her team, the NMI not only sets the standard for measurement science but also inspires the next generation to carry forward the values of innovation, inclusivity and excellence. Their work ensures Australia remains resilient and progressive in a rapidly changing world.

‘We’re not just keeping up, we’re leading the way. I’m proud to be part of a team that’s making a difference’.
