The International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) is commemorating its 70th anniversary this year. This marks 7 decades since Australia signed the OIML Convention on 12 October 1955.
Legal metrology is the legislative and regulatory framework that governs measurements and measuring instruments used for trade, law enforcement and other legal purposes. It aims to ensure accuracy, fairness and consumer protection in transactions and regulatory activities that rely on measurement. This helps create a level playing field across businesses and helps consumers get what they pay for.
Mr Bill Loizides, NMI’s General Manager Legal Metrology, is currently serving as Second Vice President of the International Committee of Legal Metrology (CIML).
NMI collaborates with OIML and other member countries to ensure consistent measurement regulation across international borders. This international collaboration makes it easier for Australian industries to use the latest technology, attract investment and supports our transition towards net zero emissions. It also builds trust between countries and reduces the hurdles businesses face when trading goods and services around the world.
Mr Loizides commented on the significance of this international cooperation:

Each year the NMI sets out legal metrology priorities with goals and actions to strengthen regulatory effectiveness, stakeholder engagement and measurement reliability across Australia.
These priorities closely align with the international frameworks OIML has established.
This alignment supports consistent measurement standards, facilitates international trade and fosters greater trust and cooperation between Australia and its trading partners.
