Quantum

We support the development and adoption of quantum technologies in Australia.

Quantum technology has the potential to dramatically improve computing power, communications and sensing. It could revolutionise the way we live, work and interact with the world around us.

Quantum technology could unlock improvements in:

  • advanced medical research and imaging
  • satellite navigation
  • weather modelling
  • disaster response management.

The Australian Government has identified quantum as a critical technology in the national interest.

Growing Australia’s quantum industry

The National Quantum Strategy will help grow Australia’s quantum industry and ensure it achieves its economic and social potential.

Australia’s former Chief Scientist, Dr Cathy Foley AO PSM, led development of the strategy. This included extensive consultation with the National Quantum Advisory Committee, the Australian quantum industry and the public.

Investing in quantum initiatives

The Australian Government is implementing the National Quantum Strategy through a range of programs, projects and activities.

  • Quantum Meets reports

Led by Australia’s former Chief Scientist in partnership with the CSIRO and other groups, each report details how quantum technology affects different industry sectors.
  • Quantum solutions through the CTCP

The Australian Government has awarded grants totalling $5.2million to 14 consortia through Round 1 of the Critical Technologies Challenge Program (CTCP).
  • Australia’s Centre for Quantum Growth

The Australian Government has awarded $18.4 million to the University of Sydney to establish a ‘single front door’ for Australia’s quantum industry.
  • Utility-scale quantum computer to be built in Australia

The Australian and Queensland Governments are jointly investing in leading quantum computing company PsiQuantum to boost our thriving quantum industry.

Quantum opportunities for industry

The quantum projects in Australia can receive funding, investment and support from our department and across government through a range of programs.

  • Industry Growth Program

The program supports innovative small to medium enterprises (SMEs) and startups to commercialise their ideas and grow their businesses in NRF priority areas.
  • Global Science and Technology Diplomacy Fund (GSTDF)

Eligible Australian organisations can apply for grants to collaborate with selected partner countries on priority areas of science and technology, including quantum computing.
  • National Reconstruction Fund (NRF)

The NRF finances projects that diversify and transform Australia’s industry and drive economic growth.

Quantum opportunities in education and research

Students, researchers and the university sector can get funding and support through local and international programs.

Quantum opportunities in states and territories

Building international partnerships on quantum

International collaboration advances Australia’s capability and builds a strong global quantum ecosystem. We are forming international partnerships with like-minded countries to:

  • share quantum skills, ideas and resources
  • help Australian quantum businesses access new markets.
