Reducing greenhouse gas emissions in beef cattle through feeding nitrate containing supplements method

This Methodology Determination (method) sets the rules for crediting emissions reductions achieved by replacing urea lick blocks with nitrate lick blocks for pasture-fed beef cattle as part of the Emissions Reduction Fund (ERF).

Read the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) (Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions by Feeding Nitrates to Beef Cattle) Methodology Determination 2014.

This method was part of the Carbon Farming Initiative which ran from September 2011 until December 2014 when it was integrated with the ERF.

Using the method

To use this method in your project and take part in the ERF, you need to apply to the Clean Energy Regulator. The Regulator manages project registration, compliance and crediting emissions reductions for projects under the ERF.

View eligibility requirements and how to apply on the Clean Energy Regulator website

Estimating the abatement

All projects registered under this method must use the Beef Nitrates Calculator to estimate emissions reductions.

Consultation on the method

The Domestic Offsets Integrity Committee (DOIC) operated from 2010 and endorsed the original method. The Emissions Reduction Assurance Committee replaced the DOIC in 2014.
