Low emissions technologies drive demand for Australia’s critical minerals

Growing demand for low emissions technologies is creating opportunities for Australia's resource sector.

The Office of the Chief Economist has released a report on the outlook for selected critical mineral markets in Australia.

The report states that Australia is well placed to meet increasing demand for critical minerals. Its rich resource deposits and stable economy are ideal for secure mineral supplies.  

The increased uptake of low emissions technologies is driving the need for critical minerals. They are vital to electric vehicles, battery storage and renewable energy generation.

The report reviews 4 critical minerals required for low emissions technologies. Australia is among the world's top resource holders for each of these minerals:

  • rare earth elements
  • cobalt
  • graphite
  • vanadium.
