65 years ago the Soviet Union launched the world’s first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1. The launch opened the Space Age and sparked the rapid rise of space technologies that are now part of everyday life.

Join space historian Kerrie Dougherty as she uncovers the once-secret story behind the first artificial moon and how it opened the way for the satellite networks. Today these satellite networks form an infrastructure in orbit and underpin our modern world.

This event will run for 1 hour, including time for questions.

The event will be run online and in the Australian Space Discovery Centre.

In-person attendees will also have the opportunity for one-on-one discussion with Kerrie afterwards, as well as exploring everything else the Discovery centre has to offer.
