Minister Karen Andrews announced the reappointment of Professor Lisa Harvey-Smith as the Australian Government’s Women in STEM Ambassador today.

The Women in STEM Ambassador plays a key role in our efforts to encourage girls and women to study and work in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and reduce the barriers that prevent them from doing so.

In her first term, Professor Harvey-Smith has made a substantial contribution to addressing STEM gender inequities. She has been a positive advocate and influential thought leader on STEM gender equity. Through her work, she has increased the visibility of government initiatives such as the:

  • Advancing Women in STEM strategy
  • Women in STEM Decadal Plan
  • Girls in STEM Toolkit
  • Prime Minister’s Prizes for Science

Her current activities are an integral part of our Advancing Women in STEM 2020 Action Plan. Over the next 2 years, Professor Harvey-Smith will continue to lead, drive and support activities advancing gender equity in STEM such as:

  • driving evaluation efforts for all women in STEM programs to grow the evidence base and ensure we invest in programs that are proven to work
  • continuing to work with national STEM organisations (including government participants) to trial anonymised review in funding allocation for research
  • delivering our National Awareness Raising Initiative to increase the visibility of girls and women in STEM
