The Kimba Consultative Committee met on 15 August to discuss the progress of the National Radioactive Waste Management Facility (NRWMF).
The Committee gave an update on the recent Federal Court case between the Barngarla Aboriginal Determination Corporation and District Council of Kimba.
Our department briefed members on the timeline for the community ballot and indicated that the Australian Electoral Commission will conduct the ballot on behalf of the council. The ballot will be conducted between Thursday 3 October and Thursday 7 November 2019.
Members also discussed site selection, including the size of the land package and the amenities. The current estimate is for around 160 hectares. This needs to include a community agricultural research and development zone – a requirement that came out of last year’s Senate Inquiry.
The committee heard a presentation on a transition strategy to be implemented once a site was selected. Strategies include recognising the participation of the non-host community and assisting with their future economic development. This work also includes examining potential activities and impacts for the relevant communities.
NRWMF General Manager, Sam Chard, also gave an update on establishing a Regional Consultative Committee for the host community (to replace the current, separate consultative committees).
