The Coal Mining Abatement Technology Support Package assists the coal industry and research partners to commercialise technologies that can reduce (abate) fugitive methane emissions from coal mines.

The program:

  • supports industry efforts to develop technologies and processes that will safely reduce fugitive methane emissions
  • addresses mine health and safety issues associated with the development and deployment of abatement technologies

Projects

The Coal Mining Abatement Technology Support Package supports these projects.

Safety Duct and Ventilation Air Methane (VAM)-RAB Scale Up

  • Investigates applying a direct coupled regenerative thermal oxidiser (RTO) to a ventilation fan at an operating mine site.
  • Develops a transparent approach for future installations at Australian coal mines.

Chemical Looping VAM Abatement Project

Develops and demonstrates a pilot-scale of a novel VAM abatement technology based on the chemical looping concept.

VAM Abatement Safety Project

Determines the critical science and engineering issues for the safe operation of VAM capture ducts. The components of large-scale VAM abatement systems will address fugitive emissions at Australian coal mines. The University of Newcastle launched the demonstration of this project in 2017.

Novel VAM Technologies

This project is progressing three different prototype technologies that will mitigate and use fugitive methane emissions from the ventilation air of coal mines.

Methane Capture and Abatement Optimisation

Developed an advanced approach and technologies to enhance the:

  • design and operation of mine gas drainage and ventilation systems
  • longwall post drainage efficiency

Open Cut Emissions

  • Investigated the potential uses for inverse and traverse-based atmospheric methods for estimating fugitive gas emissions in open cut coal mines.
  • Designed an appropriate monitoring network and modelling approach to maximise the accuracy and precision of the results obtained from any subsequent field trial.
