This phase of the Supporting Indigenous Business Project identified opportunities for government to address the challenges Indigenous businesses face and improve Indigenous business owners’ access to government support. Many of these opportunities require cross agency collaboration, however there were opportunities for our department to progress work on its own.

Phase 1 report

This report:

  • builds on the government’s Indigenous Business Sector Strategy
  • presents the findings of Phase 1 of the Supporting Indigenous Business Project
  • identifies opportunities for government to improve the way business support programs meet the needs of Indigenous businesses

  • Department of Jobs and Small Business
  • Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet
  • NSW Department of Industry

Next steps

In response to this report, our department committed to:

  • progress immediate actions within our department to respond to a number of the opportunity areas identified
  • explore partnerships with relevant federal and state departments to investigate the viability and feasibility of initial ideas proposed during ideation sessions and how we may address them[1]
  • socialise this report with relevant internal and external stakeholders
  1. A number of the opportunity areas will be addressed by initiatives being rolled out, including under the Indigenous Business Sector Strategy. Further investigation of initial ideas proposed by businesses will take into account existing initiatives and how departments can work together to achieve results and avoid duplication.
