Australia’s National Greenhouse Accounts are made up of a series of comprehensive reports and databases that estimate, and account for, Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions. These publications fulfil Australia’s international and domestic inventory reporting requirements. The Quarterly Update of Australia’s National Greenhouse Gas Inventory reports on the latest estimates of Australia’s national greenhouse gas inventory.

This Quarterly Update provides:

  • comprehensive national emission estimates for all sectors, including the land sector, up to December 2017
  • emissions estimates for the National Electricity Market (NEM) for the most recent quarter (March quarter 2018)

Key data

Australia's annual emissions for the year to December 2017 are estimated to be 533.7 Mt CO2-e. This figure is 2.4 per cent below emissions in 2000 (547.0 Mt CO2-e) and 11.7 per cent below emissions in 2005 (604.7 Mt CO2-e).

For the March quarter 2018, emissions from the NEM decreased by 0.4 per cent on a seasonally adjusted and weather normalised basis, and decreased 4.9 per cent in the year to March 2018 when compared to the previous year.

For the December quarter 2017, national emissions level increased 0.8 per cent relative to the previous quarter on a seasonally adjusted and weather normalised basis. For the year to December 2017, emissions increased 1.5 per cent on the previous year. The expansion in LNG exports, with an estimated production increase of 41.4 per cent over the previous year, was the major contributor to this increase in emissions.

Emissions per capita, and the emissions intensity of the economy, were at their lowest levels in 28 years in 2017. Emissions per capita in the year to December 2017 have fallen 36.3 per cent since 1990, while the emissions intensity of the economy has fallen 59.4 per cent since 1990 (Figure 1).
