Australia's National Greenhouse Gas Inventory: December 2015
Australia’s National Greenhouse Accounts are made up of a series of comprehensive reports and databases that estimate, and account for, Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions. These publications fulfil Australia’s international and domestic inventory reporting requirements. The Quarterly Update of Australia’s National Greenhouse Gas Inventory reports on the latest estimates of Australia’s national greenhouse gas inventory.
Australia's annual total emissions for the year to December 2015 are estimated to be 535.7 Mt CO2-e. This figure is the third lowest emissions level since the year to December 2000. It is also 2.5 per cent below emissions in the year to December 2000 (549.6 Mt CO2-e), and 9.5% below emissions in the year to December 2005 (591.9 Mt CO2-e).
For the December quarter 2015, national emissions levels, excluding the Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry sector, have been relatively stable, increasing by 0.2 per cent in trend terms, and by 0.1 per cent relative to the previous quarter on a seasonally adjusted and weather normalised basis.
Emissions per capita and the emissions intensity of the economy, including the Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry sector, were both at their lowest levels in 26 years in the year to December 2015. Emissions per capita have fallen 30.6 per cent since 1990, while the emissions intensity of the economy has fallen 55.1 per cent since 1990 (Figure 1).
In November 2015, the Government's projections were based on an assumption of an adjusted 545.7 Mt CO2-e for 2015 whereas, in this publication, emissions are estimated to have been 535.7 Mt CO2-e in the year to December 2015, a decrease of around 10 Mt CO2-e (Figure 2). This outcome has already been reflected in the Tracking to 2020 - April 2016 update (see section 6. Related Publications and Resources).
