Engineering technicians work with engineers to design, build and test equipment, conduct experiments, collect data and identify and solve engineering problems.
Engineering technicians perform manual and technical tasks under the direction of an engineer or engineering technologist. They are responsible for equipment maintenance, including troubleshooting problems, installing and upgrading systems, ordering parts, and servicing or repairing equipment.
Drafting and CAD skills are very important in this role. Engineering technicians need to be able to interpret or create technical drawings, blueprints, schematics or specifications. They also need strong written communication skills in order to maintain accurate logs or write reports and technical documentation.
Engineering technicians also test products and systems and compare the results with the original specifications. They perform quality control tasks and report back to the team on any alterations that may be required. Engineering technicians need strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
