Improving government transparency and public services

Main content area

The Australian Government is committed to being transparent, accountable and responsive.

Open government partnership (OGP)

The OGP is for governments who want to improve governance and services for their citizens.
To become a member of the OGP, participating countries must:

  • endorse an open government declaration
  • consult the public and deliver a national action plan
  • commit to independent reporting on progress

There are 70 members in the OGP including the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. The Minister for Finance coordinates Australia’s involvement on behalf of the Prime Minister.

National action plan

OGP governments publish a national action plan every 2 years. The plans must detail how the government will promote transparency, empower citizens, fight corruption, and harness new technologies to strengthen governance.

Implementing action plan commitments

Australian Government agencies are responsible for implementing the government’s action plan commitments.
