Electricians and electrical technicians construct, install, test and repair electrical systems, equipment and components.
Many satellite and spacecraft components and systems need electricity to operate. Electricians and electrical technicians work with engineers to make sure every part gets the power it needs. They are responsible for installing electrical and electronic components according to detailed specifications. Manual dexterity is a requirement of the role, as many of these components are very small. Soldering and wire harnessing skills are also important.
Safety is of utmost importance when handling electricity. Electricians and technicians need to keep their knowledge of safety regulations up to date. They also need to know how to use diagnostic and testing tools to find and correct faults.
Study pathway
Becoming an electrician usually requires completing an apprenticeship. Employers generally require apprentices to have a minimum Year 10 education.
Some TAFE institutes also offer associate degrees in electrical engineering.
