The Office of the Chief Economist produces publications on industry policy, innovation, energy and resources and  programme evaluation. Publications meet professionally accepted standards for method and quality.

A rigorous clearance process for all outputs is maintained to ensure the integrity and quality of the research. Work is peer reviewed as appropriate by experts inside and outside the department.

  • Industry Monitor
    The Industry Monitor has been updated. This interactive dashboard provides a consolidated source of high-level data and economic indicators relevant to the portfolio’s interests. The Monitor lets users interact with the data in a way that suits their needs.

  • Resources and Energy Quarterly
    The December 2017 Resources and Energy Quarterly has been released. This edition updates the estimates and outlook for Australia’s resources and energy production and exports for 2016–17 to 2018–19. This release also includes a special chapter on major resource and energy projects in the investment pipeline.

  • Evaluation Strategy
    The Evaluation Strategy 2017-21 outlines the department’s approach to performance measurement and reporting, according to good evaluation practice. This includes preparing programs for future evaluations, planning for evaluations across the lifecycle of a program and using evaluation findings to improve decision-making.

  • Australian Innovation System Report
    The Australian Innovation System Report 2017 explores the high-growth firm (HGF) phenomenon in Australia. The report suggests that innovation has a positive effect on firm growth. Across all firms, product innovation lifts turnover growth by 3.3 percentage points. There has been considerable policy interest in HGFs as potential vehicles for job creation and income growth.
