Like Australia, Chile values science and innovation as key to national social and economic prosperity, and has taken steps to strengthen its science and innovation system.

In 2007, the Chilean Government endorsed a National Strategy on Innovation. This strategy has a 15-year horizon, and focuses on investing in human capital, research capacity, knowledge transfer and collaboration.

The Chilean Government aims to increase its overall investment in R&D to a 1% share of GDP by 2010, and has introduced a specific mining tax to increase the resources available to implement this.

Australia and Chile share research interests in many areas, including astronomy, mathematics, mining and minerals technology, agriculture (including viticulture), renewable energy, water management and biotechnology.

Australia-Chile Mining Workshop - Adelaide, 11 November 2009

The Australian Academy of Science, with funding from the Australian Government in conjunction with the Embassy of Chile in Australia, organised an Australia-Chile scoping workshop in the area of water efficiency in mining.

As a result of the workshop, several areas of potential collaboration were identified that will be pursued in 2010.

Further information on the workshop can be found on the Academy’s website.
