Australia and Canada have much in common. Canada is a moderate but growing research partner for Australia, with the number of Australian scientific publications with Canadian collaborators growing steadily from 2.8% in 2001 to 3.9% (of total publications) in 2008.

Science and innovation are among the Canadian Government’s priority areas. Canada’s Science and Technology Strategy was launched in 2007 with new science and technology measures initiated since its release. The Canadian 2009 Budget announced $5.1b in new spending in the areas of science and technology infrastructure, research, people and commercialisation.

Across the portfolio, Australia collaborates with Canada through the Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) Program, the Australian Research Council (ARC), CSIRO, and the Department maintains a policy dialogue with Canada on several issues, including space policy, innovation and commercialisation.

In addition, Australian and Canadian higher education institutions share close relationships, with numerous formal agreements existing between universities in the two countries.
