Brazil’s emerging strength in science and technology make it an attractive partner for Australia’s researchers. In recent years, Brazil’s output of science and technology publications has rapidly increased, as has the number of masters and doctorate holders graduating per year.
The Brazilian Government has placed policy emphasis on research by announcing a National Science, Technology and Innovation Plan 2007-2010, with the aim of expanding and consolidating the national science, technology and innovation system and increasing overall investment in research and development.
The National Science, Technology and Innovation Plan will also focus efforts on strategic areas of R&D, including biotechnology and nanotechnology, health, ICT, biofuels, space, and natural resources.
These areas join existing areas of mutual interest for Australia and Brazil, such as mining, agriculture and nanotechnology. In recent years, the Australian Government has supported activities with Brazil in the areas of mining and biotechnology innovation in agriculture.
