Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility
The Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility Act 2016 was passed by Parliament on 3 May 2016 and the headquarters has been established in Cairns on 1 July 2016. NAIF is a major long term initiative of the Government’s White Paper on Developing Northern Australia (Our North, Our Future). The NAIF is being supported by the Export Finance and Insurance Corporation (Efic), Australia’s export credit agency.
The Minister for Resources and Northern Australia, Senator the Hon Matthew Canavan is responsible for the NAIF, which is led by an independent Board. Ms Sharon Warburton (WA) has been appointed Chair to the Board of NAIF and is joined by:

- Mr Khory McCormick (QLD)
- Dr Sally Pitkin (QLD)
- Mr Bill Shannon (QLD)
- Ms Karla Way-McPhail (QLD)
The NAIF offers up to $5 billion over 5 years in concessional finance to encourage and complement private sector investment in infrastructure that benefits Northern Australia. This may include developments in airports, communications, energy, ports, rail and water.
The Investment Mandate sets out the guidelines to the Board when making investment decisions. It includes consultation requirements and eligibility criteria, and the types of financial assistance that can be offered.
