The National Nanotechnology Strategy

In February 2008 Senator Kim Carr, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research approved the National Nanotechnology Strategy Implementation Plan. The National Nanotechnology Strategy (NNS) aims to establish the environment that allows Australia to capture benefits of nanotechnology while addressing the issues impacting on successful and responsible development of nanotechnology. Key initatives within the strategy are:

  • The Australian Office of Nanotechnology
The Australian Office of Nanotechnology (AON), based at the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, coordinates the implementation of the National Nanotechnology Strategy (NNS).
  • Health, Safety and Environment
Under the Strategy regulatory frameworks are being reviewed to keep pace with continuous development and the release of nano-enhanced materials, products and services.
  • Public Awareness and Engagement
The program is aimed to raise awareness and develop knowledge of the opportunities and potential of nanotechnology, and to encourage an informed debate based on balanced and factual information.
  • Measurement
The National Measurement Institute (NMI) implements the Australian nano-metrology capability objectives of the NNS.
  • International Engagement
Government agencies participate in a number of international forums related to Measurement, Public Awareness, Health, Safety and Environment and Industry Development.
  • Industry Activities
The AON has supported a number of important industry events and initiatives.
