In 2007 Biotechnology Australia (BA) arranged for an independent evaluation of the National Biotechnology Strategy (NBS) and BA to be undertaken by Deloitte Insight Economics. This was consistent with the government requirement for terminating programs to be evaluated, given that funding for the NBS and BA ceases on 30 June 2008.

The report evaluates the performance of the NBS and BA against the criteria of appropriateness, effectiveness and efficiency, and comments on the policy grounds on which a new NBS could be sought and the key issues it may need to address. The evaluation involved significant stakeholder engagement including

  • face to face and phone interviews with 47 stakeholders
  • four roundtable discussion groups
  • an online survey with 107 responses

The final evaluation report was completed in January 2008. The report is being considered in the context of the National Innovation System Review.
