Announcement
Senator Kim Carr, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research announced the establishment of the Automotive Industry Innovation Council (AIIC) on 10 November 2008 at the launch of A New Car Plan for a Greener Future.
The AIIC provides advice to the Minister and acts as an innovation advocate for the industry. The Council considers industry innovation challenges like climate change, sustainability and industry competitiveness as well as issues such as regulatory reform, workforce capability, skills needs, access to new technologies and other priorities for industry.
The AIIC provides leadership to the automotive sector. It also communicates the Government's innovation policies and goals, and builds relationships and linkages with peak industry bodies and industry stakeholders.
Membership of the Council
Dr David Charles was announced as the inaugural chair of the AIIC on 19 December 2008. On this day Senator Carr also announced the membership of the AIIC. A list of current AIIC members is below.

Meetings of the Council
The first meeting of the AIIC was held in Melbourne on 29 January 2009. The second meeting was held on 1 June 2009. The third meeting was held on 5 November 2009. The fourth meeting is proposed to be held in late January 2010.
AIIC Communique
As part of the AIIC's industry engagement strategy, a communique (.pdf, 271KB) will be regularly published. The communique will provide stakeholders with an overview and update of the Automotive Industry Innovation Council's work.
Automotive Australia 2020 - automotive technology roadmap
The AIIC endorsed the development of an Australian automotive industry technology roadmap at its 1 June 2009 meeting. The roadmap will be developed by the AutoCRC, with assistance from the Australian National University, the CSIRO, and the University of Cambridge. The project is jointly funded by the Australian and Victorian Governments, with the AutoCRC also contributing some of its own funds. The roadmap is expected to be completed by April 2010. A vision report was released on 28 September 2009, marking the completion of the first of six phases for the roadmap project.
