The Australian Government is committed to making the Australian automotive industry greener. On 10 November 2008, the Prime Minister launched A New Car Plan for a Greener Future which is the most comprehensive plan ever devised for this vital sector of our economy. It brings every player in the industry together in a partnership that will reshape the industry and deliver enduring benefits to all Australians.
Under A New Car Plan for a Greener Future, the Government will provide $6.2 billion to assist the automotive industry to prepare for a low carbon future and to make the industry indispensable to global markets and supply chains.

FEATURES OF THE NEW CAR PLAN
INITIATIVES UNDER THE NEW CAR PLAN
- Automotive Transformation Scheme (ATS)
ATS will replace the Automotive Competitiveness and Investment Scheme (ACIS). It will emphasise research and development while also requiring eligible companies to demonstrate an environmental commitment. ATS will commence on 1 July 2010.
- Green Car Innovation Fund (GCIF)
The $1.3 billion Green Car Innovation Fund will encourage the production of low-emission, fuel-efficient vehicles and components.
- Automotive Industry Structural Adjustment Program (AISAP)
The $116.3 million Automotive Industry Structural Adjustment Program will strengthen the automotive components sector by facilitating structural adjustment within the automotive supply chain and providing training and assistance to displaced workers.
- Automotive Supply Chain Development Program
The Automotive Supply Chain Development Program will provide $20 million over the four years to 2012 -13 to strengthen capabilities in the components sector and improve supply chain integration.
- Automotive Industry Innovation Council
The AIIC will act as an advisory body to the Minister and as an innovation advocate for the industry. The Council will consider industry innovation challenges like climate change, sustainability and industry competitiveness as well as issues such as regulatory reform, workforce capability, skills needs, access to new technologies and other priorities for industry.
- Automotive Market Access Program (AMAP)
AMAP will boost component suppliers’ access to global supply chains. An automotive champion will be appointed to promote the industry using an expanded Austrade adviser network in four countries: China, India, Korea and the USA.
- LPG Vehicle Scheme Enhancement
This initiative will make new LPG vehicles more affordable and encourage early adoption of new technologies, such as direct-injection LPG engines.
REVIEW OF AUSTRALIA'S AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY
The leader of the Review panel, Hon Steve Bracks, submitted the Review report to the Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research on 22 July 2008. The Government released its response to the Review, A New Car Plan for a Greener Future on 10 November 2008.
